It was an exciting moment when the Gut Microbiota and Probiotic Science Foundation (India) was registered as a society on 9th November 2011 under the Societies Registration Act XX1 of 1860. Established by eminent scientists, the Foundation has been created to perpetuate the science of Gut Microbiota and Probiotics in the country.

The grand plan is to convene an annual symposium to bring together International and National experts to unravel factors that shape the microbial communities of the gut and identify latest developments in probiotic science to allow for their utility as an important nutritional intervention for improvement of health.

The proceedings of the symposium are published as a book with an ISBN number and widely circulated among health care professionals to provide a repository of information. The Foundation will strive to engage in partnerships with established organizations in India and act as a catalyst to promote probiotic research. The Foundation has recently instituted the Young Investigator Award for young scientist to felicitate talent and knowledge in the country.

The model underpinning the Gut Microbiota and Probiotic Science Foundation (India) is future focussed and forward thinking and the Foundation continues to garner substantial recognition as a major initiative to perpetuate the evolving science.

As we move from Metchnikoff to Microbiome,we find ourselves in a time of optimism for the potential therapeutic haul to be derived from interventions that can favourably modify the gut microbiome.

We hope that the Gut Microbiota and Probiotic Science Foundation (India) through its activities will pave the path for future research and utility of probiotics in the country.
